FITNESS AND HEALTH

Gandhi was a high-energy person, and being fit and healthy mattered to him. As a college student, he had gotten a lot of exercise walking around London, and he continued to walk for exercise for his entire life. In historic photos, Gandhi is often seen walking with others or alone. On his ashrams, Gandhi saw the benefits of hard physical work and exercise through daily chores such as clearing the land, plowing fields, weeding, harvesting crops, picking fruit from trees, and fetching water from the spring or wells.

Although Gandhi had a number of serious illnesses during his life, being healthy was a high priority. Part of Gandhi’s health regimen was closely linked to what, when, and how he ate. Although he had a slim physique, in his autobiography he said he enjoyed eating and typically ate a lot of food. As a vegetarian, Gandhi derived vital nutrients for his body through a variety of nonmeat foods such as grains (rice, wheat, oats, corn); legumes (peanuts, pulses, lentils, beans, peas); roots and tubers (potatoes, carrots, yams); and nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios), along with many other fruits and vegetables. Although he abstained from milk for a number of years, he did drink goat milk and consume dairy products such as butter, ghee, and curds.

Gandhi was very attuned to how he felt, and he experimented with different kinds of diets throughout his life. At one time he went on a “fruitarian” diet, eating only fruits and nuts. Another time he ate only five foods a day. Like his mother, he sometimes fasted and didn’t eat for days or weeks. He believed it was best to not eat overly salty or spicy foods, or too much sugar.
